East Waikato Schools Photography Competition
October 29th - November 10th 2010
The Nature of the Beast
For the third year running, Morrinsville Art Gallery Charitable Trust organised a photography competition for students in the East Waikato region. The competition was open to year-groups 7-13, with the promise of an exhibition in the brand new Wallace Gallery which opened its doors to the public on October 16th 2010.
35 Schools were invited to take part, and this exhibition shows all of the entries received.
The theme for this year was “the Nature of the Beast” a topic which could be interpreted in many different ways. The three independent judges looked for interesting interpretations of the topic, as well as skilfully and sensitively crafted images. This theme could be explored in “obvious” ways, like portraits of family pets, or farmyard animals, but it could also be taken much further to include comments about mankind or man-made objects juxtaposed with Nature. The horror theme is also laid open, with nightmarish “inner beast/inner demon” interpretations a possibility… there are so many ways the students could go with this idea and the results were impressive!
Nearly 70 people turned up at the award ceremony on Friday October 29th, and all students -bar one- were present to receive their prizes! There was a great atmosphere in the Community Gallery, and the three judges commented on the high standard of work, as they handed out the awards.
