East Waikato Schools Photography Competition 2011
Community Gallery Oct 27th - Nov. 8th 2011
The Beauty Within
For the fourth year running, Morrinsville Art Gallery Charitable Trust organised a photography competition for students in the East Waikato region. The competition was open to year-groups 7-13, with the promise of an exhibition in the Wallace Gallery which opened its doors to the public on October 16th 2010.
35 Schools were invited to take part, and this exhibition shows all of the entries received.
The theme for this year was “The Beauty Within” a topic which could be interpreted in many different ways. The three independent judges looked for interesting interpretations of the topic, as well as skilfully and sensitively crafted images. This theme could be explored in “obvious” ways, like images of nature or portraits of family pets which held emotional significance to the photographer, but it could also be taken much further to include more subtle social comment… there are so many ways the students could go with this idea and the results were impressive!
Wallace Gallery Morrinsville is keen to promote and encourage school exhibitions and creative competitions for young people, and this is one of many displays that has showcased the deep pool of artistic talent which is present in the region. The exhibition in the Community Gallery changes every two weeks, which allows a great number of amateur groups, schools and colleges to show their work in a professional facility alongside award-winning, internationally renowned artists.
Being able to provide this service for the Community has always been at the heart of the vision for the Morrinsville Gallery.
This photo Gallery shows all the winning images, but there are over 60 entries displayed in the exhibition
Due to the small numbers of entries, year 10 (1 entry) was combined with years 12 – 13. The judges did not know the age of the students when reviewing the images.
Thanks to the Creative Communities Scheme for sponsoring the event
