The that that it is

works by Ann Byford, Taupiri – North Waikato

These paintings focus on the iconic landscape and architecture of the Waikato District. At times the work appears cartoonish, quirky and alive and other times, still and silent.
I use photography to capture and store my ideas and at times go flying above the area in a micro light aircraft. I am interested in how the subject fits into the geography of the land and how the image can be reduced or enlarged through the process of painting.
This exhibition is about the audience experiencing the work NOT as a POST CARD image, but as a sense of being up-close, personal and seeing ‘the that that it is’. Often imagery of iconic landscape and architecture is reproduced over and over, laced with detail leaving little else for the viewer to engage with.

Ms Byford exhibits works in a number of shows and galleries in the Waikato. A current national outdoor exhibition features a large 3 piece sculpture titled “Mana o te Mana”. The Summer exhibition ‘Sky Above, Earth Below’ features over 35 New Zealand artists and home to almost 100 art works at the Waitakaruru Arboretum Sculpture Park near Cambridge. The exhibition closes early March 2012.
Ann graduated from Wintec in 2008 with a Bachelors Degree in Media Art, majoring in painting and sculpture, her studio practise is open by appointment.
