Matamata Society of Arts 2012
Wallace Community Gallery April 19th to May 1st 2012
Founded in 1955, the aims of the Society are to promote the study, practice, cultivation and appreciation of the arts.
For many years the Society has been responsible for the developing of skills in various art forms in our district through a wide variety of workshops tutored by well-respected and professional tutors from outside our district. They include painting, - oil, watercolour, acrylic, silk, mixed media: pottery, fabric art, papercraft, mosaics and woodcraft.
The Society was a founding member of the Combined Bay of Plenty art Exhibition (commonly known as Bay Arts) held annually where a different Society hosts the exhibition. Many of our members gained Awards for their work.
The Society owns its own Gallery/workshop which is situated at the Firth Tower Museum, Tower Road, Matamata and monthly meetings and workshops are held there.
Club nights are held on the third Monday of the month at 7.00pm when members present their work. This is followed by an activity or a guest speaker.
Every year an Annual Exhibition of members' work is held at the Matamata Memorial Hall together with the work of invited Guest Artists. An Art Award, which is open to all, is also held.
The Society owns a stock of equipment which is available to financial members who are able to use this equipment independently following Gallery guidelines.
