Feeding the HensRuth Manning
Collection: Rural Recollections
When I was five or six years old we lived on a small holding where my mother kept her beloved hens. With three dairy cows milking, there was always milk going “off” The excess was put out under the hedge to make “curds and whey” then we would open up the gate to the hen-run and the hens would come running. My mother probably cleaning out the hen-house at the same time. I loved feeding the curds out.
