As with most of my portrait paintings, the concept evolves as I develop it and quite often I have to wait until it is finished to know what it will ultimately look like. The initial concept was based on an irony between my name and that of the subject of the painting. My name literally means "Priceless Pure Light" which I have always construed to mean (in a religious context) "the light of God or the Angels". The subject's surname is "Dessange" which means "of the Angels" in French. Hence, in the painting the subject has become an angel looking into the light. A simple concept, but enough to play with to create something original.
